laura Ingalls Wilder
One lovely afternoon in the the big woods of Pepin, Wisconsin a baby was born who will change part of the world forever her name is Laura Ingalls Wilder, that Laura is ME!
moving & school
I was born on February 7,1867 in a log cabin deep in the big woods just near the frontier town of Pepin,Wisconsin. Ma & Pa came to live in the big woods four years before I was born.Mary,my older sister was born there in 1865 also.We left the big woods when I was just over a year old.We moved often, we went from Wisconsin to Missouri and Kansas, then we wanted to go back to Wisconsin, to northern Iowa, then back to Minnesota, and FINALLY to De Smet,South Dakota all before I was 12! Wenever I could I would attend in one room school houses. When we got to Indipendince,Kansas Pa wasted no time to start our new home. Ma & Pa had plenty of reasons to move like the Homestead Act in 1862.
indians
When we were in Kansas my first sight of the indians was a big surprize. Pa had gone hunting and 2 men from a nearby camp intruded into our house! By midsummer the Indians left thier camp behind, Pa even took Mary, and I to thier camp!In the fall the indians came back and a leader came to visit. He and Pa sat by the fire, ate, and smoked pipes together, Pa felt like a friendship had formed! But soon Pa found out that everybody sattled in our area had to move.
marriage & teaching
When I was 15 I earned my teacher certificate and began teaching.I was 18 when I fell in love and married Almanzo Wilder,he is ten years older than me so he was 28. Soon we settled near De Smet My daughter Rose was born there a year later in 1886.We left in 1894 to Mansfield,Missouri. We bought a land we called Rocky Ridge,we made it a family farm.
How my writing began
I wrote newspaper articles about my families life, then i felt like writing books about my childhood. I had not thought of writing Little House on the Prairie or any other little house books until I was nearly 60 years old. I was smelling a sunflower i had picked out of my garden and all my memories came back to me and I wanted my family back and all the times we have had together. I kept all the memories and wanted to write some down as a book, then my daughter Rose wanted me to publish my book. When i finally did readers wrote to me for more books and gave them that. And that is how i'm famous.
